A FRIENDLY croc has been spotted near Cairns Esplanade while a group of Cairns locals were fishing.

Smiley McGowan from Cairns was fishing around Hills Creek when they saw the crocodile.

“We like fishing and we have seen a few crocs. That was a bit of a special one right in suburbia there, right in the middle of the action,” Mr McGowan said.

But the friends were shocked at how friendly the croc was.

“He was a tame one, we actually got a lot closer to him and he was a friendly bugger, he wasn’t too shy,” he said.

“We were a couple metres away from him in the boat, and he was good with us but I obviously didn’t want to get too close.”

A croc spotting isn’t too bizarre in Cairns. A croc was seen in Port Douglas back in January at a popular swimming spot.
