Rangers have launched an investigation after a crocodile took a pet dog on a beach outside a Far North Queensland resort over the weekend.
A crocodile has snatched a pet dog from a beach outside a popular Far North resort.
Rangers are investigating the weekend attack at Cape Tribulation that occured just weeks after a teenage boy was bitten in the area.
The Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation confirmed the incident in front of the Cape Trib Beach House, located north of Cape Tribulation.
“Rangers were onsite yesterday (Tuesday, December 2) to conduct a thorough assessment, and we encourage people to continue quickly reporting sightings so that we can promptly investigate,” she said.
“You can report crocodile sightings via the QWildlife app or by calling 1300 130 372.
“We investigate every sighting report received.”
Cape Trib Beach House, which was listed for sale in September this year, sits metres from Cape Tribulation Beach.
Established in 2000, this resort features 27 guest cottages and cabins, a bar and restaurant, swimming pool, management residence and staff accommodation.
“Set across three hectares of untouched rainforest within the ancient Daintree National Park, this property is one of the few accommodation businesses in the region,” a real estate listing said.
“With strict environmental protections under the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, making this offering truly unique and irreplaceable.”
The resort has been contacted for comment.
In October this year, the department relocated a large crocodile suspected of attacking a teenage boy from Myall Creek near Cape Tribulation to a crocodile farm.
The teenager was reportedly fishing in waist-deep water with friends when he was bitten by the apex predator.
The group helped the boy out of the water and back to nearby accommodation provider PK’s Jungle Village, where staff and paramedics provided initial care before he was flown to Cairns Hospital.
The department said evidence strongly suggests the crocodile removed was the crocodile involved in the incident due to its size, location and appearance.
The department has recorded 15 crocodile sightings in Douglas Shire this year, according to its sightings dashboard.
A further 19 have been recorded in Cairns, 42 in Cassowary Coast, two in Mareeba and four in the Tablelands.
