A crocodile spotted close to shore at Mission Beach has prompted the Cassowary Coast Regional Council to issue a reminder for people to be crocwise.

On Saturday afternoon, north of Wongaling Beach between Castaways Resort and Mission Beach Camping and Caravan Park, a crocodile was sighted by holidaygoers Lyn Mattinson and her husband.

“There were several people on the beach which was positive as people were advising others of the sighting – safety in numbers,” she said.

Stunning pictures of the creature in beach waters were captured by Ms Mattinson.

Her sighting followed an earlier sighting of the crocodile on Friday.

The Cassowary Coast council issued a reminder for people to be aware it was crocodile breeding season between October to April, and that no waterway in North Queensland could ever be considered crocodile-free.

“During the breeding season, male crocodiles become more mobile as they look for a mate and smaller animals are pushed out of rivers due to competition,” the council said.

Michael Ibanes posted a video on social media, saying that his family had spotted the same crocodile when walking towards the water to wet their feet on Friday.

“We thought it could be a rock until it moved,” he said.

In the video uploaded by Mr Ibanes, the crocodile can be seen submerged in water, very close to the shore.

Paul Honey wrote that he had spotted what appeared to be the same crocodile around 3.30pm on Saturday at the northern end of Mission Beach, and posted a picture of the creature peeking out of pristine blue waters.

Crocodile sightings are to be reported to the Department of Environment and Science by calling 1300 130 372 or via the QWildlife app which allows users to view reported and targeted crocodiles.
