The Millstream man who spoke about the moment he was “unintentionally” shot at by police has been arrested on 21 charges including two counts of fraud and one charge from being caught with four illegally obtained bank cards.
Cody Wright, 35, who is now facing 46 charges, appeared in Cairns Magistrates Court on videolink from the Mareeba watch-house to apply for bail.
The court heard the new charges laid on May 21 include driving an uninsured vehicle, driving without a licence (demerit point suspended), receiving tainted property, using a vehicle with the wrong number plates, driving an unregistered vehicle, possessing drug utensils, driving a defective vehicle and two counts of failure to appear in accordance with undertaking.
He is also facing seven charges of unlawful weapon possession, six possession of dangerous drugs, two receiving tainted property, possession of a knife and a stealing charge.
Police have charged him with two counts of fraud where it is alleged the concreter took payments of $1000 from two people who wanted their driveways asphalted but did not complete the work.
In one case it is alleged he took the money but never started the work.
Another ten are driving and traffic charges.
Police arrested Mr Wright on March 7 this year at a carparking space along Ravenshoe’s busiest street, Gregg Street.
Police charged him with two counts of possessing a dangerous drug and two weapon offences.
Police have admitted the firearm was “unintentionally discharged” by police officers at the scene.
During the arrest, Mr Wright said he was thrown to the ground, hit in the stomach repeatedly and with two different tasers.
Facing the nine new charges in the Mareeba courthouse, Mr Wright applied for bail.
“He was found to be in a defective vehicle and those and the other offences are likely just to attract a fine” duty lawyer Natasha Jackson argued.
“It is not offending at the absolute highest level,” Ms Jackson said.
“If bailed he would agree to wear an ankle monitor.”
Magistrate Gelma Meoli said she was concerned about giving bail to someone “with this sheer quantity of charges” and said the “fraud charges are probably the ones I am most concerned”.
Magistrate Meoli did, however, grant Mr Wright bail on the condition he report to Ravenshoe police station once per week.
The matter returns to court on July 1.
