Oodles of poodles and plenty of pooches unleashed their charms for the weekend return of Cazalys Top Dog in competitions raising money for the RSPCA.
The family fun day at Cazalys Stadium in Cairns for owners and their four-legged friends featured photo booths, cupcakes, raffles and a mini market with leading local and animal-based businesses.
For the kids there was free face painting, balloon animals and two jumping castles, all for a gold coin donation on entry.
With $1600 in prizes up for grabs, pups were entered into eight competition categories, including scruffiest pooch, dressed to the k9s, golden oldie, best trick and happiest hound.
The main event was the Dachshund Dash featuring 25 little-legged canines competing in heats, semis and the final to find FNQ’s fastest wiener dog.
Redlynch resident Jess Lindsay entered speedster Zoey, who took out her first heat of the day and moved on to the later rounds before taking out second place in the final.
Ms Lindsay said it was the first time she had seen an event like this and knew she had to get Zoey involved.
“We knew she was a fast dog so we thought we had to give it a go,” she said.
“She got a bit distracted on the first one and ran halfway and came back before finishing but by the final she knew exactly what she had to do.”
The 18-month-old speedster wasn’t just a star on the track, also taking out the happiest hound award.
“This is just the beginning of her career. We will definitely be back next year” she said.
Last year the event was the highest fund-raising event for the RSPCA in Queensland and this year they upped the ante with a fund-raising goal of $10,000.
