VIP punters could soon be hollering down Tom Hedley’s equine armada of lightning-rod sprinters in a new facility right on the bend at Cannon Park Racecourse.
The Cairns Jockey Club has lodged plans with Cairns Regional Council to build a modern club facility to be used during racing events.
It would be a 648sq m single-storey structure with an 880sq m outdoor terrace.
“Internally, the building would provide a large open function room of 422sq m, a food and beverage room of 136sq m and amenities with a floor area of 61sq m,” the application states.

“The building would have its primary frontage overlooking the racetrack to the north with the entrance from a defined entry to the south.”
Large glazed windows have been earmarked to provide the crowd with unobstructed views of the course while they sink beers and have a gentle flutter.
“The proposed building is not expected to result in an additional use that would generate demand for additional parking above that associated with the existing use and any carparking demand would be accommodated within the carparking area already provided,” the document continues.
The proposal has not been assessed by the council and no construction date has been set.
The club is currently gearing up for the Cairns Cup Carnival with Ladies Day on August 21 and the Cup Day on August 28, ahead of the Cairns Amateurs in September.
