A new generation of babies has been welcomed into the world, including Far North Queensland’s first bub to be born in 2025.
Cairns’ first 2025 baby, Hayze Dalzell, one of the first to be born in Generation Beta, was born at 3.10am on January 1 at Cairns Hospital.
Generation Beta — nicknamed Beta Babies — will be born between 2025 and 2039.
New parents Letesha Fyffe and Ryan Dalzell said they were surprised to hear their son would mark the start of a new generation.
“I actually never heard the new term ‘til today when one of the nurses said it and I was like oh that’s a bit interesting,” Ms Fyffe said.
Despite being due on Boxing Day, baby Hayze was born more than a week later.
“We thought he was gonna come earlier actually but he decided to cook for a little bit longer,” she said.
After an almost 12-hour labour, Hayze arrived in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
“We knew that there was someone else in labour, so it was a bit of a competition between us to see who was gonna have the baby first,” she said.
“But yeah, first baby of the new year is pretty cool.”
The arrival of their new bub also marked a new beginning from the couple who moved to Cairns from Western Australia.
“We’ve been here for about a year now and (Cairns) good, it’s perfect,” she said.
“We love it here and now we get to raise a baby.”
Proud dad Mr Hayze said it was surreal to have his own little family.
“I’m pretty proud. He’s probably one of my biggest accomplishments,” he said.
“It’s something I’ve always dreamt of and now he’s finally here, it’s surreal.”
However Mr Dalzell said there would be a bit of rivalry in the family come State of Origin.
“I’m a New South Welshman and he’s a Queensland baby so there’s gonna be a bit of rivalry now,” Mr Dalzell said.
“But he’ll be a Queenslander since he was born here.”
As at 12pm on January 1, Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health service confirmed two babies had been born on New Year’s Day.
