Cairns Court: Ada Alice Wikmunea, who is accused of the Edmonton stabbing, applies for bail in court

A woman ran off after she was allegedly stabbed in the back, collapsing in front of two people outside an Edmonton bottle shop, a court has heard.

Ada Alice Wikmunea is alleged to have stabbed a woman in the back in what the prosecutor described as an “unprovoked” attack.

Details of an alleged knife attack have emerged as Ada Alice Wikmunea appeared in court on Thursday October 5 over the alleged stabbing of a woman in her 20s near an Edmonton BP petrol station on Wednesday afternoon.

A Queensland Police spokesman said they learned of the alleged incident when a 25-year-old woman, 25, presented to the service station with a 5cm wound to her abdomen and was transported to hospital in a serious condition.

Police declared a crime scene at the location, with a second crime scene established at a park on Ravizza Drive.

Ms Wikmunea, who hails from Aurukun, was subsequently charged with one count of grievous bodily harm.

Prosecutor Stuart Clyde-Smith told the court the women knew each other, but the alleged attack appeared “unprovoked, to the extent that provocation would not even remotely rise to a defence.”

Prosecutor Stuart Clyde-Smith told the Cairns courthouse the defendant posed “an unacceptable risk to the community” and should be denied bail.

“She was walking back from KFC in Edmonton, walking back to the park, and another person in the group had a knife in his lap,” Mr Clyde-Smith said.

“The defendant then grabbed the knife and just ran up and stabbed the victim in the back.”

He explained the alleged victim then ran around the BP service station, then to outside a bottle shop where she is alleged to have “collapsed in front of two witnesses”.

Ms Wikmunea, who sought bail, watched the proceedings from a video link in custody.

Her lawyer, Bernard Campigli, argued his client had a limited criminal history, and that “there would be a delay in sending the matter to the District Court,” and “several witnesses provided accounts contrary to that given by the alleged victim.”

It’s alleged Ms Wikmunea grabbed a knife from a man’s lap and stabbed the woman in the back.

Mr Clyde-Smith told the court the prosecution opposed the bail application.

He said the residential address that Ms Wikmunea suggested she be bailed to was only a short walk from that park where the alleged victim and other members of the Aurukun community had been residing.

“The offences are far too serious, and she would be far too close to the victim if she were released,” he said – and also suggested Ms Wikmunea would commit further offences if intoxicated.

Acting Magistrate Alan Comans denied the bail application.

“Here, the risks of violent offending against others is a relevant concern,” he said.

Ms Wikmunea was remanded in custody and will appear again for mention on November 24 in the Cairns Magistrates Court.

The victim remains in a stable condition in Cairns Hospital.
