Police have released footage capturing the tense moment they chased down several teenagers suspected of criminal activity during a property crime blitz in Far North Queensland.
In the crime crackdown, a staggering number of teenagers were arrested after detectives carried out the successful sting operation on the Tablelands.
Fourteen teenagers were charged following the operation carried out by detectives from the Tablelands Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) and Mareeba General Duties officers, which concluded on January 17.
The 14 teenagers were charged with 39 offences.
Tablelands Detective Acting Sergeant Derek Hicks the operation had been a success which was reflected in 53 matters being investigated and finalised.
“Tablelands police also work with young people in the community to implement intervention and engagement strategies and assist families to address the circumstances that can lead to offending,” he said.
“Our officers will continue to conduct bail checks and bring offenders before the court, to keep the community safe.”
Among those charged was a 15-year-old Mareeba boy following the alleged theft of a Mazda BT-50 from a Kowa Street address on January 7.
Authorities further alleged the Mareeba boy was involved in various property offences dating back to August 2024.
He was charged with six counts of breach of bail, two counts of enter premises and commit indictable offence, and one count each of enter premises and commit indictable offence, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, wilful damage, and driving of a motor vehicle without a driver’s licence, obstruct police officer and possess by night instrument of house breaking.
He was refused police bail and was set to appear in the Mareeba Childrens Court on January 13.
In addition a 16-year-old Mareeba girl was arrested on January 17, suspected of her involvement in a number of offences.
Police allege she gained entry to a parked vehicle at a Doyle Street venue by smashing a window, before stealing items from inside.
She was charged with five counts of breach of bail and one count of enter premises and commit indictable offence.
The 16-year-old is scheduled to appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Court on Wednesday, January 22.
In a separate incident another 16-year-old Mareeba girl was arrested on January 12 in relation to multiple offences, including the alleged theft of a Mitsubishi Pajero on December 28 last year.
She was charged one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle (publish on social media), stealing, wilful damage and enter dwelling and commit.
She is scheduled to appear in the Mareeba Childrens Court on February 24.
The remaining 11 teenagers were issued Notices to Appear or were dealt with under the Youth Justice Act in relation 19 other property and traffic offences.
