The body of a 26-year-old man has been recovered from beneath the boardwalk at the Cairns Marlin Marina.
Police are investigating the grisly discovery, which happened about 2.45am on Tuesday, October 25.
A police spokesman said community members discovered the man, believed to be from Parramatta Park, and tried to revive him until emergency services arrived, but he died at the scene.
Police are currently treating the man’s death as non-suspicious and believe it could have occurred due to an accidental fall while the man was fishing from the wharf.
Police are preparing a report for the coroner.
“Ultimately, it will be up to the coroner to determine the cause of death,” a police spokesman said.
Paramedics, including a critical care unit, responded to the incident and found the man with critical injuries.
A local business owner said Ports North, the local port authority, had erected a temporary barrier where the cables of the standing boardwalk’s barrier were cut during the extraction of the man’s body.
The man’s death coincides with recent drowning deaths in the Far North, including that of a woman who drowned at the Cairns One apartment complex in Westcourt.
