A girl has been hospitalised after being hit by a car outside a south Cairns school.

Paramedics were called to Bentley Park College at 8.23am after the girl was struck by a vehicle driving down McLaughlin Rd.

Queensland Ambulance Service said the patient was a pre-teen girl with a reported back injury.

Bentley Park College is a state school for prep students through to year 12 pupils.

Speaking generally about road safety outside schools, Cairns Regional Council Division 3 councillor Cathy Zeiger encouraged parents to be patient and respectful of others when dropping off and picking up children.

“I think because a lot of the way schools are designed it has been an issue but Bentley Park is quite new and is an improvement on many schools like Woree (State School) and St Marys,” she said.

“Parents need to chill out and stop and look.

“Sometimes people are selfish and don’t move on and it causes so much frustration.

“Afternoons are usually worse, parents will sit there in the stop drop and go zone.

“It’s a really big problem and I would like to see TMR have some dialogue with me to improve the stop drop and go safety.”

The little girl injured this morning was taken in a stable condition to Cairns Hospital.

Bentley Park College was contacted but referred an invitation for comment to the Department of Education head office in Brisbane.
