WEDNESDAY’S NEWS
CAIRNS RESCUE HELICOPTER ON POLICE SEARCH MISSION
The noise of the Cairns rescue helicopter thundered over the rooftops of southern suburbs residents in the early hours of Wednesday morning, causing some to feel it was flying lower than usual.
The aircraft was repurposed by Queensland Police at 12.03am to search for vehicles reported as stolen, according to a Cairns Police spokeswoman.
The helicopter made multiple passes over western suburbs such as Manunda and Mooroobool before extending its search area to Edmonton.
The aircraft, which maintained an altitude of 1100ft during the operation, was unable to find the vehicles of interest, said the police spokeswoman.
The height of the helicopter was of little comfort to snoozing citizens as multiple residents of southern and western suburbs were startled awake by the noisy engines and rotors.
“It woke me up. I asked my husband ‘what’s that?’. He just rolled over and said ‘bloody helicopter’,” said Mooroobool resident Colleen Bojack.
“It probably sounded lower than it was because it was midnight when there is less noise than usual,” said the police spokeswoman.
The aircraft returned to base at 1.53am.
TUESDAY’S NEWS
SOUTHSIDE CAIRNS UNDER SMOKE
Far North residents living in the southside of Cairns are under a thick cloud of smoke.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said they’re unsure what could be causing the smoke but speculated that the permitted burns at cane farms happening in Gordonvale could be the likely source.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster, Matthew Bass, also speculated that the fires at cane were to blame and that a trade wind inversion was pulling the smoke closer down towards residents.
“Temperature increases acts like a lid and stops air from having vertical movement which traps the smoke lower down, closer towards the ground,” he said.
“It’s well known the smoke does have medical impacts for vulnerable people.”
SHOPPERS DISRUPTED BY FALSE ALARM
Far Northerners were evacuated on Monday afternoon after a fire alarm was sounded at Smithfield Shopping Centre.
Two Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews attended the scene at Kennedy and Caption Cook highway after a call was made at 1.40pm.
QFES crews revealed the incident was a false alarm that went off as ‘malicious activation.’
A QFES spokesman said malicious activations, where someone has deliberately pulled the fire alarm, “happen all the time” in the Far North and presumed it might have been a child.
The crews left at 2.20pm as shoppers were given the okay to re-enter the centre.
