A man allegedly at the centre of a viral video in which a woman is kicked, pushed and verbally abused on the Cairns Esplanade has been arrested and charged.

A man allegedly at the centre of a viral video in which a woman is kicked, pushed and verbally abused on the Cairns Esplanade has been arrested and charged.

According to police, the incident occurred on Friday night, July 18, while a street performance on the Cairns Esplanade was underway.

A large crowd had gathered to watch a performer preparing to light fire sticks when the alleged assault unfolded.

The two-minute video share on social media showed multiple onlookers trying to intervene as the man and woman became involved in an alleged confrontation.

Police have since charged a 39-year-old Edmonton man in connection with the incident. He was arrested on Tuesday, July 22, and charged with one count each of serious assault of a person over 60, common assault, and committing a public nuisance.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on July 23.
