A 12-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with a series of car thefts and break-ins across a ten day period within the Cairns area.

Police alleged the boy was part of two separate car thefts between December 7 and 17, as well as an attempt to break into a Brinsmead home.

Authorities reported locating the boy, submerged in a storm water drain, after he was allegedly involved in the theft of a MG ZS from a Redlynch address on December 11.

In addition, it’s alleged he attempted to break into a home in Brinsmead the following day, and was also involved in the theft of an SUV from Whitfield the week prior, on December 7.

“It is allegedly the boy was involved with stealing a Subaru Forester from a Whitfield address,” a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said.

Authorities finally located the boy on December 17 at a Shang Street address.

He has since been charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count of attempted breaking and entering.

The boy was refused bail and will appear before Cairns Children’s Court on Wednesday, December 18.

This latest arrest has come after Cairns was labelled the crime youth capital of Queensland, highlighting the ongoing issue of vehicle thefts in the region.
