A teenage athlete from remote NT who burst on to scene as a 10-year-old will represent Australia at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships.
Briseis Brittain, 17, has been selected as part of a strong squad of 51 to take on the championships in New Delhi from September 26 to October 5.
Brittain was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth and is aiming for the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles with her disciplines being 100m, 200m, 400m and long jump.
The proud Gunalbingu and Njebbana woman from Ramingining and Maningrida was identified at the age of 10 when she burst onto the national scene at the School Sport Australia Championships.
She returned to the NT with a gold and silver medal to her name and has since competed and impressed at multiple national events.
Now she has her chance to make her international debut in the 200m and 400m as part of the largest Australian Para Athletics team since the Sydney 2000 Paralympics.
Briseis has benefited from the support of her dedicated sprints and jumps coaches and the Northern Territory Sports Academy Para Futures program over the past two years.
Her results have improved significantly in her race time and consistency on the track.
Athletics NT executive officer Leanne Chin has closely followed Briseis’ journey over the years and has been incredibly proud of how’s she’s progressed.
“I am proud of how far Briseis has come since COVID,” Chin said.
“She has shown great improvement over the past two years and real commitment to her sport and training.
“The competition pathway for Para athletes has never been stronger, not just for 2025, but looking ahead to LA 2028 and Brisbane 2032.”
