Urgent recall for Uncle Frog’s mushroom gummies after five consumers hospitalised

A health supplement has been recalled after five people were hospitalised, with some patients experiencing “disturbing hallucinations”.

A public health warning has been issued after five people were hospitalised after ingesting mushroom gummies, with some patients reporting “disturbing hallucinations”.

The NSW chief health officer has warned people not to consume Uncle Frog’s mushroom gummies after several people presented to hospital experiencing unexpected toxicity.

Don’t consume these mushroom gummies.

NSW Poisons Information Centre’s Darren Roberts urged the community to avoid using the cordyceps and lion’s mane gummy products.

“Investigations are ongoing as to what these products contain. We are strongly recommending that people do not consume these products,“ Dr Roberts said.

At least five people have been treated in NSW hospitals after ingesting the gummies since April 2024, while other states have also reported hospitalisations.

Patients have reported signs and symptoms of nausea and/or persistent vomiting, seizure-like activity and involuntary movement, anxiety, disturbing hallucinations, drowsiness or loss of consciousness, dizziness or light-headedness, or having a racing heart/pulse.

Both products, which have a best-before date of March 21, 2025, have also been recalled by Food Standards Australia New Zealand following the reports.

FSANZ stated the recall was due to the presence of unapproved novel food ingredients – lion’s mane and cordyceps.

“Consumers should not eat this product,” it stated.

“Consumers should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

“Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical attention.”

The mushroom gummies have been advertised to “boost your immune system and promote overall wellbeing”, according to Uncle Frog’s.

However, it’s understood the company’s website may have been taken down after an online search failed to find it.

NSW Health warned consumers who have purchased these products to dispose of them safely.

The cordyceps and lion’s mane gummy variety should also be kept away from children and pets to avoid accidental consumption.
