Concerns road safety is being impacted by cost-of-living crisis

A mother of 11 children has been left devastated after her fiance was killed in a motorcycle accident just moments after she sent him a message urging him to “drive safe”.

Hayden Selby, 31, was killed when a car, allegedly driven by his friend, collided with his motorcycle on the M1 Motorway near New Mount Pleasant Road, Mount Ousley, south of Sydney on July 19.

Mr Selby’s friend was driving behind him and towing a box trailer as he guided her to the family’s new home when she allegedly crashed into his motorcycle.

Mr Selby’s heartbroken fiance Katie Powell has shared the devastating final message she sent Mr Selby in the moments before his death.

‘Hayden was helping a friend down the coast move on Friday and I texted him in the arvo and said ‘’I love you, drive safe and take care of each other’’,’ she told 7News.

Ms Powell grew increasingly concerned when she had not heard from her fiancee hours later, noting the silence was “out of character”.

The grieving mother and grandmother to two children said she received a phone call about 6pm from a friend of Mr Selby’s who delivered the devastating news.

Ms Powell said everything has been “one big blur,” since her fiancee died.

“I drop my kids off at school each day and after that I don’t know what to do,” she said.

“We have an eight-month-old and she won’t ever get to know her father … it’s not fair.”

Ms Powell described the father of her children as a “beautiful man” as she comes to terms with life as a “newly single mother”.

“This beautiful man was always the first to jump the second anyone needed help, he fought struggled and battled to give my children (and) I what we have made together,” she said.

‘I just don’t know how to do this, I’m a newly single mother with 11 children, 2 grandchildren and the man that took damn good care of all the (important) things in our lives is gone.”

Ms Powell has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral costs and future living expenses.

“Any money I have left on the weekly after paying our bills goes entirely on food for our children,” she said.

“I just want to give him what he deserves please help me spoil the love of my life and father to my children one last time.”

On Saturday morning, the fundraiser had raised nearly $4000 following 62 donations.

Ms Anthony has been granted bail and will return to court later this month as investigations into the crash continue.
