A man is fighting for life after he was allegedly hit in the head with a baseball bat during a street brawl, with police looking to speak to up to 40 people.

A 28-year-old man has been hospitalised with serious head injuries after he was allegedly hit with a baseball bat during a street brawl.

Emergency services were called to a reserve on Byrnes St in South Granville, in western Sydney, around 5.40pm on Sunday following reports of a brawl.

The brawl allegedly involved between 30 to 40 people armed with knives, machetes and baseball bats.

NSW Police found an injured 28-year-old man when officers arrived at the scene.

Footage from a nearby house shows a man running down the street, followed by a group of at least six men.

One of the man’s pursuers can be seen carrying a baseball bat as he runs.

The man had sustained “serious head injuries” which were treated by paramedics before he was taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.

NSW Police said the group of alleged brawlers dispersed when officers attended the scene on Sunday evening.

A 29-year-old man was arrested nearby in South Granville and taken to Auburn Police Station.

He was later charged with affray and custody of a knife in a public place.

He was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Local Court on Monday.

Police will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
