A student has been rushed to hospital in serious condition after a balcony collapse at an elite private school in Melbourne.
It’s understood the student from St Kevin’s College in Toorak was on a deck when a piece of timber from the deck failed, causing him to fall through it.
A St Kevin’s spokesperson said the Year 7 student had suffered fractures to his wrist, collarbone and leg but was in a stable condition.
A Victoria Ambulance spokesperson confirmed paramedics were called to the school about 11.20am on Friday.
“A teenage boy with upper and lower body injuries was transported by road ambulance to The Royal Children’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition,” the spokesperson said.
A St Kevin’s spokesperson earlier told the Herald Sun the boy was “responsive” following the incident.
“An ambulance was called immediately and his parents contacted. Please know that although we do not have the full details of his condition, he is responsive,” the spokesperson said.
Counsellors were reportedly available on campus between 1.30-3.30pm on Friday, with support also available after hours and over the weekend.
“We are mindful that some staff and students witnessed the event and we will continue supporting them,” the spokesperson said.
“We are aware that incidents such as these can impact people differently.
“I wish to acknowledge the swift and professional action of all staff involved in a challenging situation.”
