A man has died after being found unresponsive with serious head injuries inside a car on the Gold Coast, with another man now charged with his murder.
The 44-year-old man was found inside a car on Beale St, Southport at about 9.50pm on Saturday.
Police allege he suffered the head injuries when he was assaulted by a 28-year-old man at a property on the same street about 20 minutes prior.
The 44-year-old was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital but was declared dead.
Superintendent Brett Jackson told reporters on Monday the men were known to each other.
It is not yet known whether they were known to police.
“We don’t believe that a weapon was involved, so we believe it was a strike of some sort,” he said.
Neighbour Sophie said she did not witness anything, but was horrified by the “scary” news.
“I just woke up and saw the police tape and just knew something was wrong, “ she said.
“I didn’t hear or see anything, I just woke up … and thought, ‘Oh my god, this is real’.”
Police were notified of the man’s death early Sunday morning and launched an investigation.
Superintendent Jackson confirmed CCTV footage had been obtained in and around the address at the time of the incident.
The 28-year-old man, from Stafford Heights, was taken into custody on Sunday.
He has since been charged with murder and is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.
“At this stage, we believe that we have the (alleged) offender in custody and there are no other people outstanding that we are currently looking for,” Superintendent Jackson said.
Police are urging anyone with information to come forward or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
