Why Taylor Swift fans in huge Melbourne queue

A Queensland family travelling for a trip of a lifetime to see Taylor Swift in concert has been left heartbroken after one daughter was killed and another was placed in an induced coma following a horror crash in regional NSW.

Emergency crews were called after reports of a two vehicle crash on Dunedoo Rd, Ballimore, about 30 kilometres northeast of Dubbo, about 6pm on Thursday.

Mieka Pokarier, 16, died at the scene, while her sister, identified as 10-year-old Freya Pokarier, was flown to Sydney’s Westmead Hospital in a critical condition and placed in an induced coma.

Mieka was sitting in the front passenger seat when the crash occurred, while her sister was in the back seat.

The two girls were travelling with their mum, who was driving, to Melbourne in their SUV to see Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

The woman was treated by paramedics before being taken to Dubbo Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the semi-trailer was also taken to Dubbo Hospital in a stable condition.

On Saturday Mieka and Freya’s father, Peter Pokarier, shared his grief on social media.

“That’s my baby that died,” he said.

He also shared a link to the GoFundMe page created by the girls godmother, Karleigh Fox.

“My family and what I live for. I’m devastated,” he wrote.

Ms Fox said the girls and their mother had been so excited to see Taylor Swift, having secured tickets to both the Melbourne and Sydney shows.

“Last night one of my dearest friends was driving from the Gold Coast to Melbourne with two of her children (my god children) when they were involved in a front on collision with a semi trailer,” she wrote on the GoFundMe.

“We are heartbroken to have lost one of her children (aged 16) whilst the 10 year old has been lifted to Westmead Hospital in critical condition, fighting for her life with brain injuries, a damaged pelvis and broken leg.

“This was supposed to be a road trip of a lifetime with them going to concerts in both Melbourne and Sydney.”

Tributes have started flowing in with friends sharing their fond memories of the 16-year-old on social media.

“Mieka, oh what a beacon of light you were,” Cheyenne Craige wrote on TikTok.

“I never thought I’d have to imagine going to your house and you not being fast asleep in your bed or having to tell you to hurry up or we’re leaving you behind.

“You deserved to live for so many more years but unfortunately you were taken way too early.

“I love you Mieka, come back soon please. I miss you now, and forever.”

Both Mieka and her younger sister Freya had been members of the Gold Coast Youth Theatre Academy.

“This one is very special and important to us. All 4 children in this family have been students of Kellie’s at one time or another,” Academy owners posted on Facebook, sharing a link to the GoFundMe page.

“Mum and daughters off on a trip of their lifetime to see their idol Tay Tay, only to have their lives turned upside down in the blink of an eye.

“Our hearts our (sic) hurting today so we cannot imagine how this family is feeling.”

Ms Fox said the rest of the family had since flown to Sydney to be at the bedside of the 10-year-old girl who remains in hospital.

Her mother is expected to fly from Dubbo on Saturday.

“I’m so overwhelmed with the outpouring of generosity and love towards the family, wow over $4k already,” Ms Fox wrote in an update on Saturday morning.

“Thank you. As you can imagine there is a lot of work ahead of us and this will help immensely to reduce some of the pressure.”

The fundraiser has since raised more than $10,000 at the time of publication.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
