A passing motorist made a chilling discovery when they found a young man lying unresponsive on the roadside.

A late-night drive turned to tragedy after a passing motorist found a young man lying unresponsive on a rural roadside, the victim of a suspected hit-and-run now under urgent police investigation.

Emergency services were called to Old Kurrajong Rd in Richmond, northwest of Sydney, about 7.45pm on Sunday after a motorist stopped and tried to save the 23-year-old, who was found critically injured on the roadside.

Paramedics arrived soon after, but the man died at the scene.

Police said early inquiries indicated the man was struck by a vehicle that failed to stop.

About an hour later, and less than 10 minutes away, officers were called to a paddock off Kurmond Rd, North Richmond, where a Nissan Navara had reportedly left the roadway and rolled several times.

A 41-year-old man was treated at the scene for minor injuries and taken to Westmead Hospital for assessment.
