Man dies after allegedly attempting to force his way into cars at knifepoint

A man who police say was armed with a knife and trying to force his way into other people’s cars has died after being arrested.

A man has died after he was arrested for allegedly attempting to force his way into cars while armed with a knife, with the incident to be probed during an internal police investigation.

Police were called to Remembrance Driveway at Tahmoor in Sydney’s southwest on Friday afternoon, responding to reports of a man armed with a knife trying to stop traffic and enter vehicles.

A statement from NSW Police says officers found a 33-year-old man on the bonnet of a car that was stopped in traffic, drawing their Tasers and ordering the man to lie on the ground.

The man surrendered and was handcuffed.

NSW Police said the officers did not discharge their Tasers during the incident.

The man was being taken to hospital under police guard when he suffered a medical episode.

The ambulance stopped by the roadside and paramedics – assisted by police officers – attempted a “co-ordinated lifesaving operation”, NSW Police said.

However he could not be revived and he died at Liverpool Hospital.

“A critical incident team from Bankstown Police Area Command will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“The incident is also subject to an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.”
