Man charged after allegedly hitting two people with his car while doing burnouts

The young driver was allegedly doing burnouts before he struck a young woman and a teenager, who were taken to hospital in a serious condition.

A young man has been hit with a slew of charges after allegedly striking two people when he lost control of a car while doing burnouts in NSW last week.

Emergency services were called to Somerset Drive in Port Stephens after reports two people had been injured by a car about 11.40pm on March 15.

A white Ford Falcon was allegedly performing burnouts in front of a crowd of people when the 22-year-old driver lost control.

The car hit a power pole before crashing into a 20-year-old woman and a 14-year-old girl who were standing nearby.

The vehicle caught fire and the driver allegedly left the scene, police said.

The two injured people were taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition after NSW Ambulance paramedics treated them at the scene.

A crime scene was established and the Crash Investigation Unit investigated the incident.

The man has been charged with two counts of causing bodily harm by misconduct (in charge of motor vehicle), interfering with a person’s enjoyment or risk safety, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, failing to stop and assist after impact causing injury, negligent driving, and driving a motor vehicle while license is suspended.

He was granted strict conditional bail and is due to appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on May 6.
