A teenager has been charged with murder and another man remains in hospital under police guard after a father-of-two was killed in a brazen daylight shooting in Sydney’s west on Friday.
Mal Seve was killed when he was shot in his chest, neck and legs in Blacktown on Friday morning.
Paramedics treated the 28-year-old, who is understood to have been a member of the Inner West Brotherhood gang, but died at the scene at Carinya Street.
Two men were arrested after a brief police pursuit, which ended when their Mazda ute crashed on nearby Kildare Road.
Hoani Tewhare, 18, was charged with murder, take and drive conveyance without consent and failing to stop during a police pursuit.
Mr Tewhare did not apply for bail as he appeared in court for the first time on Saturday.
He appeared via videolink from jail and was told he would next appear in court in January.
Another man, 25, remains in hospital under police guard.
It was reported Mr Seve ran to a neighbour’s house for help, and they called triple-0.
Superintendent Brendan Gorman said on Friday that no one else was injured during the incident.
“It is early days and it’s a complex investigation with a number of crime scenes,” he said.
“Police did an amazing job, they were on the scene in seconds … police heard the shots being fired and responded immediately.”
Superintendent Gorman said it was not yet known whether the shooting was related to gang violence, but both suspects and Mr Seve were known to police.
A tradesman working nearby heard sirens and saw someone jump a fence before “a copper grabbed him.”
“The cops took him down and arrested him,” Ousama Hawat told The Daily Telegraph.
A witness Mohammed Hamdan told Nine Newspapers he was from Gaza and was 50m away when he heard about five shots fired and immediately recognised the sound.
“I have heard this sound before, but here in Australia, this is first time I have experienced something like that,” he said.
“It was a war zone when I last heard something like this.
“The sound was so strong. I saw police cars here near the entrance, and someone running and jumping the fence.”
