Heather Knight will make a call on her future as England captain in ‘coming weeks’

Heather Knight says she will take time before deciding on her future as England captain after her side endured a historic Ashes clean sweep.

“Gutted” England captain Heather Knight will wait until the emotion of the Ashes whitewash subsides before she makes a call on the future of her leadership.

Knight, 34, led the English through its historically worst tour down under as the Aussies claimed the first ever Ashes clean sweep, 16-0.

Knight denies it being the lowest point of her career as England captain but says she will make a call on her captaincy in coming weeks.

“There’s always highs and lows and that’s the joy of the job sometimes, it tests you, it tests your character,” she said.

“The good times and the bad times and I guess you have to take it on the chin, (take) the bad times to enjoy the good times.

“I am probably going to sit on the fence again and say it’s the time to probably not think about it (her future).

“Things are pretty raw, it obviously happened pretty quickly, the coming weeks is a time for everyone to reflect on what we could have done better and how we’re going to improve as a side.

“I guess that’s not an emotional decision that’s is going to be made now, it’s in the coming weeks.”

Knight had a consistent series without going on to record a big score, making 229 runs at an average of 32.

The captain was in early in almost every match with opener Maia Bouchier, 42 runs at six, enduring a poor summer against the new ball.

Knight conceded the tour was extremely challenging, especially as a leader with her side underperforming at every turn.

“It’s always a tough place to come and tour as a cricketer and particularly as a leader,” she said.

“When things aren’t going right it’s always pretty tough but ultimately, the results, we haven’t played well enough and you’re going to feel that as a leader.

“I am certainly frustrated with how the team has gone, we haven’t shown our best cricket, we’re all very frustrated with that and pretty gutted.”
