A car has plunged off a bridge and crashed onto railway tracks west of Sydney on Wednesday morning, throwing peak-hour travel into chaos.

The mangled wreck of the vehicle was found on the tracks at Blaxland at about 6am on Wednesday.

Two people were assessed at the scene but no one required transportation to hospital.

The dramatic crash has shut down all trains between Springwood and Penrith on the Blue Mountains line, with Sydney Trains warning the recovery and repair effort is expected to stretch well into the day.

Matt Quinn from Sydney Trains said the delicate task ahead involved removing the wreckage and fixing damage to critical infrastructure, including overhead wiring.

“Passengers should look for pre-announcements and check information screens before getting on trains,” Mr Quinn told The Daily Telegraph.

“Blue Mountains passengers should delay travel if possible or consider using other transport.”

Transport for NSW confirmed buses are now replacing trains between Springwood and Penrith, but services remain heavily affected.

Passengers are being urged to allow extra travel time, listen for announcements and check live updates on information screens or via transport apps as crews work to clear the wreckage and restore the line.

The disruption comes on top of separate delays hitting the T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line, where urgent train repairs at Martin Place are adding up to 30 minutes to some journeys.
