A man with life threatening injuries has been rushed to hospital after an inner city building was engulfed in flames, with smoke blanketing large areas.

A man has been rushed to hospital with life threatening injuries after an inner city building became engulfed in flames.

The fire in the inner-Brisbane suburb of Woolloongabba created larges clouds of smoke across the area.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) were called to a commercial structure on Hubert Street in Woolloongabba about 4.30pm on Wednesday.

It is believed the single-storey building was abandoned.

Police declared an emergency and shut down surrounding streets near Brisbane’s CBD as more than 50 firefighters from 13 fire and rescue crews battled the huge blaze.

An ambulance spokesperson said a man with life threatening airway burns was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Paramedics were on standby for emergency services who were working to contain the incident.

A police spokesperson said an exclusion zone was in place around Gibbon Street, Stanley Street, Raid Street and Hawthorne Street.

“Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and those within the exclusion zone are asked to remain indoors until further notice,” the spokesperson said.
