Cop allegedly stabbed during fake burglary call

Footage of the moment an 18-year-old allegedly stabbed a police officer because he “wanted to go to heaven” has been released by a Melbourne court.

Moses Thurairajasingam was arrested on September 3 after allegedly reporting a fake burglary before attacking an officer when they arrived at his home.

The teenager appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday afternoon when a bail application was denied after police claimed he posed an “unacceptable risk”.

Wearing a white shirt, he sat in the dock flanked by two guards with his eyes closed. His mother, Angela, and three elder siblings sat in the body of the court.

The court was told police were called to a George Frederick Rd home at Cranbourne West about 5.08pm on Tuesday.

Detective Senior Constable Ashley Hall said police alleged Mr Thurairajasingam had earlier called and reported a man had assaulted him inside the home before leaving.

She said when two uniformed officers arrived, the accused teenager failed to respond to questions before allegedly lunging forward and stabbing a senior constable in the right upper thigh.

In body-worn camera footage played to the court, the officer could be heard yelling “oh f--k, ah I’ve been stabbed” as he fell backwards.

Senior Constable Hall said police alleged Mr Thurairajasingam dropped the knife after being challenged by the second officer before saying “shoot me, shoot me, shoot me”.

“The accused deliberately lured police to him,” she said.

“Police believe bail is not acceptable in the circumstances and strongly oppose this.”

Senior Constable Hall said Mr Thurairajasingam had allegedly asked his sister earlier in the day if he stabbed a police officer “would they shoot him”.

It’s alleged he said he “wanted to be shot so he could go to heaven” during the arrest.

The officer remains in hospital and will undergo surgery after allegedly receiving a 5cm deep wound from a 13cm kitchen knife.

The court was told Mr Thurairajasingam was diagnosed with schizophrenia and depression in 2021 and had been medicated since a seven-week stint in hospital.

He was charged with offences of assault emergency worker on duty, intentionally cause serious injury, common law assault and make false report to police.

Prosecutors opposed bail, saying Mr Thurairajasingam posed a risk of danger to the community, labelling the alleged offending “calculated” and “premeditated”.

His lawyer told the court his client’s youth, lack of any priors and availability of treatment should support a grant of bail to hospital care.

But Magistrate Stephen Ballek disagreed, finding he was not satisfied any conditions could mitigate risk.

“In my view this is an extremely serious offence,” he said.

Mr Thurairajasingam will return to court in November.
