Big number donations made by Townsville company ahead of Convoy for a Cure

A major North Queensland stevedoring company based in Townsville has put its hand in its pocket ahead of this year’s Convoy for a Cure held at the end of May.

Northern Stevedoring Services (NSS) has committed $20,000 to the convoy – the largest in the convoy’s nine year history.

Convoy director Todd Martin said he was pleased to welcome such a company as NSS with this funding being passed directly to The Cure Starts Now Australia, another Townsville based organisation that acts locally with research providing global answers to paediatric brain cancer.

“There’s a lot of freight companies in the city that are always involved but to have a company like NSS which is obviously all over Queensland, regional, but here based here in Townsville I hope this is the this is the answer on the edge of the hill that pushes the rock over from my point of view,” he said.

“I find people in trucking motorcycle industries don’t want to talk about day to day living, but it’s a struggle.

“But they still find time to put money into their own pocket and a lot of them are mums and dads and they’ve got kids and they’ve got families and everyone now knows someone that unfortunately has some direct relation to a cancer.”

NSS General Manager Mark George said the annual convoy was a big thing in the local logistics and transport.

“With its charity link to The Cure Starts Now our management and staff thought what better way to highlight the importance of research into this dreaded disease.” He said.

“Our staff first hand have felt the effects of this particular cancer and anything we as a company can do to support them, and The Cure Starts Now through Convoy is a great thing.”

NSS finance manager Darren Locke said the company was hoping one of its trucks would be at the front of the convoy.

“We’re hoping to get the lead truck and have it all decked out with all the right vehicles and that sort of thing and then have some number of other trucks following along in the convoy.”

The Power 100 Convoy for the Cure bought to you by NSS is running on Sunday May 26th from 9am.

The convoy, including trucks and motorcycles, departs from Webb Drive, the Bohle, arriving via a predetermined route to Ross Dam Park under the management of the Queensland Police Service.

Entry is via way of an online portal with trucks paying $100 each and motorcycles $30 each with a deadline countdown occurring the day before where truck companies and bike owners can donate more to be positioned closer to the front of the Convoy.
