FOUR MASSIVE nights of rock will be headlined by superstars Guy Sebastian and Baker Boy as Mount Isa shapes to host one of the southern hemisphere’s biggest rodeo events.

The world famous Mount Isa Mines Rodeo, set to take place in three weeks, will be accompanied by four nights of rocking concert action.

This year the event will feature an Indigenous Rodeo Championships for the first time ever, with an accompanying concert on Thursday night to be headlined by Yolnu superstar Baker Boy.

The Sundowners Kalkutungu Dancers, the Desert Dust Dance Group and local DJ Deadly Jacob will also feature.

Mt Isa Rodeo’s CEO Natalie Flecker said the headlining star was a must to show that the new competition was a major focus.

“It’s absolutely great and it really showcases that it’s on the same level as the rest of the Rodeo,” Ms Flecker said.
“It was really important to have someone of that caliber performing. The new, Indigenous competition is certainly something we want to see grow and develop into the future.

“We’ve invested a lot of time into building the Rodeo rock and the best thing is it’s included as part of the regular ticket.”

The Indigenous competition has been bolstered by a statewide talent drive pushed by rodeo legends Fred Osman and Darren Brandenburg in partnership with Mona Aboriginal Corporation CEO Patrick Cooke.

“The wonderful thing about rodeo in Australia is how it brings communities together from all across the Gulf, the Cape and Outback Queensland,” Mr Cooke said.

“This inaugural rodeo roadshow will talk to communities and show the pathways and opportunities that rodeo can provide for young riders.”

The action will continue on Friday, as international star Guy Sebastian takes the stage and gets the Mount Isa Mine Rodeo Championships under way.

The headliner was due to perform previously, but had to cancel because of Covid, something Flecker said makes his debut even more special.

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming Guy to outback Queensland and showing him everything our region has to offer.”

The Australian Idol winner entertain audiences as the championships get going, with a record number of riders set to compete for the $300,000 total prize pool.

Indie-folk up-and-comers the Pierce Brothers will also perform on Friday night, with country-rock royalty McAlister Kemp taking over on Saturday night.

Live entertainment, market stalls and food will be available throughout the four-day Rodeo extravaganza.
