They are the rising stars of Australian surf saving full of passion and pride.

And they have travelled from across Australia - many for their first every Aussies.

Around 1000 young guns, ranging in age from 12-15, kicked off the 2023 Australian surf life saving championship in style at Scarborough and Trigg beaches in Perth.

Representing surf clubs from across the country with big numbers from NSW, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, the host state and South Australia, these young guns raced for the first national crowns at Aussies on Saturday.

The beach sprinters picked up the first crowns with iron, surf race and board titles also up- for grabs on a big day out.

The Australian championships run for nine days with close to 6000 athletes from youth to Masters racing.

Here we take a look at some of the stars, standouts and eye-catching photos from day one of the Australian surf life saving youth titles in Perth.

WIN ‘MEANS THE WORLD’

Youngster Sophie Clues was one of the happiest competitors on the beach on Saturday.

The young North Curl Curl life saver said she was “amazed’ to win the iron crown in the under 13 racing.

“It means the world,’’ said the Narrabeen Sports High student from Sydney’s northern beaches.

“I’m just so excited. I was just trying so hard. I kept saying to myself, ‘you can do it’ and I did.’’

U13 IRON

Sophie’s North Curlo Curl clubmate Pipi Te Pania then took out the U14 iron title, beating Zoe Woods from Alexandra Headland and Isabella Tate from Cudgen Headland.

Queenslander Grace Hughes then produced a sensational win in the U14 iron race.

Grace, from Tugun, beat Charli Barbour and Alannah Paul from Newport.

THREE STATES DOMINATE IRON RACING

NSW, Queensland and Western Australia dominated the iron racing on Saturday.

The biggest applause was reserved for WA local Edward Davis from North Cottesloe who won the U14 racing from Kingston Lowe from Northcliffe and Jack Stewart from North Curl Curl.

Luke Higgs from North Curl Curl then beat the inform Dane Sutton from Wanda and Noah Maggs from Newport in the U15 racing.

He was then awarded the Matthew Barclay Memorial Trophy in memory of the youngster who lost his life at the 2012 Australian titles.

In an all-NSW podium, the U13 Iron was won by Will Munro from Cooks Hill with Thomas Chalmers from Swansea Belmont second and Sidney Burns from Redhead third.

“It feels awesome,’’ said Will, who won by a big margin on a hot and humid day.

FIRST AUSTRALIAN TITLED DECIDED

Young guns from NSW, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia shared the medals in the beach sprints - the first event decided on day one.

In the U14 Female Beach Sprint Isabella Evans from Wollongong City beat Ava O’Connell

from Alexandra Headland and Macy Boisvert from Trigg Island.

“I was very nervous at the start. You know, I had the adrenaline pumping through me but I just make sure to focus on the race, focus on my attitude and the process through the race,’’ Isabella said.

In the U15 Female Beach Sprint Queenslander Pipi Barlow from Maroochydore lived up to pre-race expectations to take gold from Phoebe Doran from Swansea Belmont and Zoe Nichols from Currumbin.

In the U13 Female Beach Sprint South Australian Elsie Parsons from Glenelg won from Jaz Edmondstone from Maroochydore and Emma Paice from Sorrento (WA)

In the U15 Male Beach Sprint Luke Newrick from South Maroubra lived up to his favouritism with his defeat of Guy Ormond from Queenscliff and Myles Fraser from Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park.

The action was fantastic in the U13 Male Beach Sprint with Trent Yates from Sorrento (WA)

winning from Jacob Martin from Metropolitan Caloundra and Ryan McNamara from

South Maroubra.

“It feels so good. It was really close racing. So yeah, this feeling is incredible,” Trent said.

“Winning here close to my home beach makes it extra special.’’

In the U14 Male Beach Sprint, Miller Siasat from Gerringong won from Dylan Sharpe from South Maroubra and Lucas Martin from Grange

“I love the atmosphere up here. It’s run so well and I love coming every year. This is my second year and I love running the Aussies. It’s great competition,’’ Miller said.

“I’m the only competitor from Gerringong. It’s great to represent them and I love competing for Gerringong.’’

YOUNG GUNS MAKE AUSSIES DEBUT

The competition was fierce from the get go in the board racing with U13 competitors at their first ever Aussies.

This age group was contested for the first time at the 2022 event.

Thomas Chalmers from the Swansea Belmont club was enjoying every minute of the event.

“It is so exciting and so much bigger than I expected,’’ he said after racing the under 13 board quarter-finals.
