Hobart College student Chelsea March recognises the stress that the ATAR score brings to many year 11 and 12 students around the state, but believes that exams shouldn’t “define where you head in life”.
The year 12 student is one of 11,300 year 11 and 12 students across the state who received their 2023 course results from Tasmanian Assessment, Standards and Certification (TASC) online on Wednesday.
Chelsea is in the top 12 students in the state after receiving a 99.8 Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR).
“I don’t think the exams themselves were the stressful part for me, but the three weeks between exams and getting our results,” Chelsea said.
“The whole time my friends and I were all second guessing what we had put down for answers, numbers we had written, the questions we had read.”
Chelsea will be heading to the Australian National University next year to pursue a double degree in her passion subjects law and economics.
“At the end of all of this, I hope that everyone knows they can still do the things they want to – maybe just on another path,” she said.
The majority of the top 12 Tasmanian students by ATAR scores came from Hobart schools, including four from Hobart College – Chelsea March, Felicity Jackson, Jemima Baghurst and Fernando Brito Carvalheiro – and four from The Friends’ School – Thomas Wilkins, Feliciantonio Churchill, Isabelle Gan-Pain and Benjamin Stankovich.
Other top students include Samuel Roberts from The Hutchins School, Samuel Rein from Scotch Oakburn College, Shannon Kelly from St Patrick’s College and Launceston College’s Oscar Tiernan.
The highest ATAR available is 99.95, with Friends’ School student Feliciantonio ‘Felix’ Churchill coming close with an ATAR of 99.9.
Feliciantonio is another student heading straight to university next year, using his great results to begin a double degree in law and science at the University of Tasmania.
The science and maths enthusiast tried to resist the stress of exams.
“I tried not to put too much pressure on myself and I am lucky that I have supportive family and lovely teachers who helped me through,” he said.
“Really, I’m just very, very happy that my results reflected all the hard work I’ve put in.”
Friends’ School principal Nelson File said the school’s results were a “testament” to the efforts of the “supportive school community”.
“Friends’ students are passionate young people who want to make a difference in the world,” Mr File said.
Hobart College’s principal Dr Libby Robinson said the top results were a credit to the students and the teachers during their 13 years of school.
Minister for Education, Children and Youth, Roger Jaensch congratulated Tasmania’s Year 11 and 12 students on their results and hard work.
