The track was dry and the air was hot but the racing was as thrilling as ever at the 52nd rendition of the Kamfari endruo.
On the Sunday of the May Day long-weekend, 41 entrants took to the 12km track out in the bushlands off Cox Peninsular Road.
While the mud and the bogs were not as prevalent as previous years, the track saw some fast racing in the four hour time limit.
In the end, it would be some familiar faces who took out the top gongs, as Jason McArthur rode his way to his fourth quads victory, and Chris Warwick cemented himself as one of the event’s all time greats following another stellar ride.
After finding the ground a few times due to some “first lap jitters”, the bikes winner was undeniable all day long, clocking the fastest lap of the race by some margin at 11 minutes and 18 seconds.
The win now his 10th podium (four runner-ups, two thirds) and his fourth victory, Warwick was stoked to be atop the dias once more.
After giving out his thanks to all the people behind the scenes who put the race together, the number 81 cited a drier course as an unexpected but pleasant surprise from years gone by.
“It was a little bit dry this year and unfortunately wasn’t as boggy, but we can’t control the weather, so it is what it is,” he said.
“The track was fantastic, it was really flowy and there were these four guys (2nd-5th) who rode really well.
“It’s really good to see some new faces and some old ones.
“(My bike) ran pretty good all day; did have a flat battery at one stage and got a lift out of a bog where I was stuck under the bike and couldn’t lift it up.
“It was a great race and thanks to everyone that turned up, and thanks to the girlfriend and her family coming up from Melbourne, my dog Garry and everyone in my extended family.”
