UPDATED: Police say there is no evidence to suggest anyone was in the kayak found this morning in the D’Entrecastaux Channel.

Police said they had conducted an extensive search and other checks, but there was no evidence that anyone had been in the vessel before it was found floating between Dennes Point on Bruny Island and Tinderbox about 8am.

An air and sea search was conducted for several hours.

If anyone believes the kayak is theirs they are asked to call police on 131 444.

EARLIER: A kayak found this morning between Tinderbox and Dennes Point has prompted a police search.

An air and sea search is underway in the Bruny Island and Tinderbox area to establish whether the kayak has floated away or if someone needs help.

“The kayak looks ready for a fishing trip and was found by marine police on a routine patrol about 8am today floating in the D’Entrecasteaux Channel between Tinderbox and Dennes Point, Bruny Island,” Tasmania Police said.

“It has a faded Perception logo on it and contains a blue net onion bag and a black Dangerfield bag with bait and two black bait savers that are full and appear recently prepared.”

Police are hoping to hear from the kayak’s owner or anyone who may know how it came to be in the water.

Tasmania Police can be contacted on 131 444.
