The interim report of the Aged Care Royal Commission has raised serious concerns.

THE operations of two major aged care providers in Tasmania will be examined as a royal commission into the system holds hearings in Hobart.

The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety will stage a week-long hearing at Wrest Point.

It will begin with a case study on Southern Cross Care (Tas), with a particular focus on Somerset facility Yaraandoo Hostel, which was sanctioned in November last year.

Another of its residential aged care facilities, Glenara Lakes near Launceston, will also be examined. It was issued with a notice of noncompliance in January.

Later in the week, the operations of Bupa South Hobart will be inspected.

The facility was one of a number of Bupa care homes that were sanctioned last year.

The royal commission will hear evidence from family members of residents, current and former staff at the facilities, advisers and administrators appointed under sanctions, and executive management.

The Hobart hearings come after the release last week of the commission’s damning interim report which highlighted the failings of the system.
