A woman was left concussed and covered in blood after she was bottled by a stranger at a Cairns nightclub over the weekend.

Sharaya Summers, 26, was on a night out with friends at Gilligan’s nightclub on Saturday when she was struck in the head and left with a shocking lump from what was believed to be a bottle.

Ms Summers, who said she wanted to wait until police have concluded their investigations before commenting about the incident, described being “bottled” at the nightclub in a Facebook post published on Sunday.

“I got bottled last night in Gilligan’s by some random man who then ran away,” the post read.

“No one knew the guy, it was unprovoked and I had no time to defend myself.

“Had to be taken to hospital, now home with a concussion.”

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman confirmed the incident and said officers had begun investigations.

“Police are investigating an incident at a Grafton Street venue (on) June 15,” she said.

“Around 1.30am, a 26-year-old Mooroobool woman sustained a wound to her head.

“She was transported to Cairns Hospital for treatment.”

It is understood that strobe lighting and a crowded venue made it difficult for security and police to locate a suspect.

Gilligan’s was contacted about the incident and safety concerns at the venue but declined to comment.

A QPS spokeswoman confirmed no person had been identified yet and urged the public to come forward if they had further details.

“Investigations into the circumstances of the injury are continuing,” she said.

“Anyone with information or relevant vision is urged to contact police.”

It is understood the incident is not being treated as an assault as it is unknown if the woman was targeted with the bottle or not.

But police data has revealed that in the past two years, 286 assaults have occurred along the street, with roughly half of the incidents occurring along the southern end of the street.
