34-year-old Kelso man charged following assault in Townsville, police seeking witnesses following victim’s death

Queensland Police are calling for witnesses or anyone who has vision of an assault that happened following an NRL finals match in Townsville to come forward after a man was charged and the victim found dead days later.

Queensland Police have charged a 34-year-old Kelso man in relation to an alleged serious assault in Townsville on September 14, the night the Cowboys took on the Knights in the NRL finals.

Police say it is alleged an altercation occurred at a sporting venue around 9:55pm and that the two men were not known to each other.

A 38-year-old man sustained serious injuries and was transported to Townsville University Hospital.

He was later found dead on September 19 just after 9:30am at an address in Ball Bay, near Mackay.

A 34-year-old man was taken into custody at the scene at the time of the alleged assault and was charged with one count of grievous bodily harm.

He is due to reappear before Townsville Magistrates Court on November 13.

As part of the ongoing investigations police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem to determine how the 38-year-old man died.

Police are calling for anyone who has dashcam or CCTV vision of three people on scooters in the vicinity of Sir Leslie Theiss Drive between 6:30pm and 7pm on September 14, or anyone who may have witnessed the assault on the southern car park side along Pride Street between 9:30pm and 10:15pm to come forward.
