A 23-year-old man has been charged with abducting a 12-year-old boy in Alice Springs last month, following his extradition from South Australia.

NT Police say the boy was last seen entering the schoolyard of a Braitling primary school on the morning of February 27, but he never made it to class.

His disappearance sparked a search, with police expressing concerns for his welfare.

On March 1, police confirmed the boy had been found “safe and well” in Coober Pedy, South Australia.

A 23-year-old man, believed to be known to the child, was arrested by SA Police and remained in custody while investigations continued.

The man was extradited to the Northern Territory on March 6 and has now been charged with abduction of a child under 16 years.

He appeared in Alice Springs Local Court on March 7 and was granted bail to return to court on April 22.

Police have thanked the public for their assistance in locating the boy.
