The “incredibly busy” Argyle St is officially Hobart’s worst crash hotspot, new data from a leading insurer has revealed.
Analysing more than 350,000 motor insurance claims across Australia from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023, the 2023 AAMI Crash Index shows that male drivers (51 per cent) in the Tasmanian capital were more likely to be involved in crashes than female drivers (49 per cent), while the worst offenders were those aged 35-49 (23 per cent).
Argyle St was the site of the most crashes in 2022-23, followed by Macquarie St, Main Rd, Moonah, Sandy Bay Rd, Murray St, and Main Rd, Glenorchy.
Liverpool St, Bathurst St, and Campbell St were new entrants to the top 10 list.
AAMI head of motor customer engagement Tammy Hall said Argyle St was “an incredibly busy road, running from Hobart’s waterfront through the CBD and North Hobart, intersecting with many major streets along the way”.
“It’s also home to restaurants, hotels, shops and a hospital, so combine this with a high volume of traffic and it’s the perfect recipe for collisions.”
Ms Hall said many of the top 10 crash hotspots shared common factors.
“These hotspots are generally major roads, intersecting with local streets through high traffic industrial, educational and shopping centre precincts, making them consistently busy throughout the day,” she said.
Accidental damage while parked was the most common type of incident recorded on Argyle St, with almost one-third of people (30 per cent) experiencing a crash in this way.
The most dangerous day of the week to be driving on Argyle St was Wednesday and most accidents happened between 1pm and 4.30pm. Drivers aged 65 and older were most likely to be involved in a crash.
While failure to give way was the top cause of crashes in Hobart, collisions with stationary objects were the most common cause elsewhere in the state, the AAMI data showed.
“Crashes from failing to give way often happen during peak hour traffic when the roads are busy, patience is wearing thin, drivers are tired from the day, and are in a rush to get to their destination,” Ms Hall said.
