Wild moment NSW man flees police pursuit

Wild footage has captured a dramatic police chase, with a shirtless driver seen fleeing from a cop car before running away on foot.

In the video shared on TikTok, an allegedly stolen white Mazda ute is seen driving around a roundabout in Erina, on the state’s central coast, on Tuesday, as a police car chases behind.

The ute then appears to hit another car, before coming to a stop on the roundabout.

Moments later, a male driver wearing only shorts and shoes, jumps out of the vehicle before leaping over the bonnet of the police car and dashing down the road.

Officers then chase the man down the road and narrowly avoided being hit by another car, as bystanders watch on.

In one video shared online, a shocked witness can be heard yelling “holy sh*” and “what the f*ck” while filming the incident.

Shortly after, the man was caught by police and arrested.

NSW Police said the officers deployed OC spray (pepper spray) during the brief foot pursuit.

Officers earlier attempted to arrest the 29-year-old, who was wanted on outstanding warrants, in a vehicle at a carpark on Bay Village Road, Bateau Bay about 2.40pm on Tuesday.

“The man ran, pursued by police before returning to the carpark and attempting to steal a vehicle,” police said in a statement.

“Police again attempted to arrest the man, however he resisted, assaulting officers before attempting to steal a motorcycle. He was unsuccessful returning to his Mercedes and driving off.”

The Mercedes was monitored by PolAir however, they eventually lost sight of the car at Wyoming “where the driver allegedly entered a home and threatened the occupants with a firearm before taking a white Mazda utility from their garage”.

The Mazda was later tracked to shopping centre at Erina where the man allegedly attempted and failed to take other vehicles before he drove off in the same Mazda.

“While driving through Erina, the Mazda collided with a police vehicle on Barralong Road, before colliding with another vehicle at a roundabout on Terrigal Drive,” police said.

After being caught by police, the man was taken to Gosford Police Station where he was assessed and taken to Gosford Hospital. He remains in hospital under police guard.

The 29-year-old has been charged with 16 offences including police pursuit, two counts of assaulting a police officer in execution of duty causing actual bodily harm, two counts of stealing a motor vehicle, three counts of hindering or resisting police officer in the execution of duty, and possessing an unauthorised firearm.

Three outstanding warrants for drug and robbery offences were also executed.

The man is due to face Gosford Local Court today.
