Lando Norris has had a bumpy start to the Formula 1 year, after a Ferrari F40 owned by the McLaren star was smashed near Monaco.
Lando Norris was not at the wheel at the time.
The classic Ferrari spun out of control and slid into a barrier, suffering damage to its expensive Kevlar bodywork.
Norris reportedly bought the car mid-2024 for around $US2.5 million ($4 million), following his first Grand Prix win in Miami.
The Ferrari F40 is considered one of the most iconic supercars in history.
Introduced in 1987, the model was the fastest car in the world.
Powered by a twin-turbocharged V8, the car sends power to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.
Forget about modern driver assistance technology such as traction control or anti-lock brakes – the F40 is as raw as they come.
Norris’ car is particularly recognisable as it has aftermarket wheels similar to those found on racing examples of the F40.
These days, the larger wheels offer a broader selection of tyres than the car’s original 17-inch rims, as high performance rubber is hard to find for small diameter wheels.
The larger alloys also offer owners the opportunity to fit larger brakes to their cars.
Old tyres have been blamed for a number of high-profile supercar crashes, including the tragic accident that killed The Fast and The Furious actor Paul Walker.
Walker was riding in a V10-powered Porsche Carrera GT that was wearing nine-year-old tyres when the car skidded out of control and crashed.
A classic Ferrari F40 crashed and rolled in the UK a few days before Lando Norris’ example was pranged.
Pictures and video of the UK car appear to show tyres with the F40’s original tread pattern, prompting suggestions that old tyres may have contributed to that car’s smash.
The highest-mileage Ferrari F40 in existence has been heavily damaged in a crash. Press F to pay respects.

It's unclear if the UK-based car, identified as having the reg 'F40 PRX', is in a salvageable state. We sure hope so. pic.twitter.com/fKgU13hlKZ
