General Motors has recalled around 721,000 cars around the world to address catastrophic engine failures in V8 powered models.
The issue affects around 10,000 cars in Australia.
The brand’s local arm, General Motors Special Vehicles, says there are “manufacturing issues” in the 6.2-litre “L87” V8 engines used in several models.

Those cars include the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pick-up truck, as well as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban four-wheel-drives.
The GMV Sierra and Yukon are also part of the recall campaign, as are the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.
Chevrolet’s Corvette range is not affected by the problem, despite having similar 6.2-litre V8 engines.
A spokesman for the brand said “there are approximately 10,000 vehicles across ANZ impacted by the recall”.
“At this time, we are not able to comment on engine failures relating to this issue in Aus and NZ,” he said.

The brand’s local arm says “the safety and satisfaction of our customers are the highest priorities for the entire GM team, and we’re working to address this matter as quickly as possible”.
The local recall follows major issues for General Motors in the US, where the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received dozens of complaints about engine failures in a handful of models.

GM’s engine trouble is a result of internal engine parts including the crankshaft and connecting rods that can fail.
The brand will inspect vehicles affected by the issue to determine whether they are safe to drive, and fix problematic vehicles without charge.
It follows a major recall for the Ford Ranger and Everest on Thursday that saw thousands of Australia’s most popular vehicles recalled to address serious engine problems.
Almost 13,500 examples of the Ford Ranger and Everest powered by the brand’s 3.0-litre “Lion” V6 have been recalled to address a potential engine problem.
A recall notice published by Ford states that “the engine could stall leading to a sudden loss of motive power whilst driving”, and that “a sudden loss of motive power whilst driving increases the risk of an accident, which may result in serious injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users”.A spokesman for Ford said the camshaft sprocket failure may result in an immediate loss of motive power (engine stall) “with no prior warning to the driver”.
