2023 Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years revealed

A special version of one of the most sought after cars in the country will touch down shortly and it turns the performance dial all the way up.

Volkswagen’s Golf R is going ballistic.

A new special edition of the popular small performance car will be the most powerful and fastest version yet.

Dubbed the Golf R 20 Years, the limited edition machine commemorates the launch of the original Golf R32.

The new model is good news for Golf R shoppers as the company is currently not taking orders on the regular version due to a crippling supply shortage.

The 20 Years edition benefits from an uprated version of the standard car’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine that makes 245kW and 420Nm, a bump of 10kW and 20Nm.

It is matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch auto and all-wheel drive.

This combination enables it to sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds, down from 4.8 seconds in the standard variant.

It is expensive, though.

Prices start at $77,490 (before on-road costs), a jump of more than $10,000 compared to the regular version.

Volkswagen has loaded the 20 Years edition with standard gear to justify the price.

A standard Akrapovic titanium exhaust should add to the theatre of the car with more pops and crackles, while a recalibrated seven-speed dual-clutch automatic delivers more aggressive gear shifts.

A panoramic sunroof and a Harman Kardon stereo are also included as standard.

These updates are joined by new 19-inch alloy wheels, 20 Years badging, black exterior mirrors and carbon fibre elements in the dashboard and doors.

There will be 50 examples available in Australia and customers will be able to order online direct from the company from July 13th.

The approach should stop dealers trying to sell demo versions of the car at inflated prices.

Dealers have come under fire recently for buying sought after performance cars then registering them as low-mileage demonstrators for thousands more than the recommended retail price.
