Thousands of SUVs recalled over transmission issue

An SUV model popular among Aussie drivers is being recalled over an issue which the government says could increase the risk of an accident.

Thousands of Kia SUVs are being recalled over fears a fault in the vehicle’s electric oil pump could lead to a serious road accident.

The urgent recall notice, issued by the federal Department of Transport on Wednesday, urges owners of Kia MQ4 Sorentos to contact their dealers and schedule a critical update.

Due to variations in the product, a crack may develop in the car’s Printed Circuit Board (PCB) of the Transmission Electric Oil Pump (EOP), the recall states.

This fault may lead to the EOP failing.

“If the EOP fails, hydraulic pressure will be lost and the vehicle may lose drive, thereby increasing the risk of an accident resulting in serious injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users,” the recall states.

About 8572 cars are affected by the notice, which covers all Kia Sorento MQ4 models made between 2020-22.

“Owners should immediately contact their preferred Kia dealer to schedule an appointment, to have the transmission software updated,” the notice states.
