Rewind to this time last year, and for an out-of-work performer like Shubshri Kandiah, life was anything but a fairytale. The pandemic had brought the theatre industry to a standstill, and Kandiah – who previously starred as Jasmine in the Australian production of Aladdin – found herself with nothing to do.
“My job is my passion,” she tells Stellar.
“Everything I do outside of performing is to help me get better at performing. That’s why when I lost work last year, I felt like it was a loss of identity.”
So when Kandiah landed the title role in the upcoming stage production of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, it really did feel like a dream come true.
“To now come back and have such a big role in such a wonderful production… well, it’s incredibly exciting,” she enthuses.
Kandiah confesses she is more nervous for her Stellar photo shoot than when she is belting out ballads to audiences of hundreds – though she enjoyed dressing up in looks far different from the ones she will wear when she steps into Cinderella’s glass slippers.
“I have not had any wardrobe fittings yet,” she says. “But I do know she has the most incredible gown, and then, of course, there are the shoes…”
Opening night at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre will hold nostalgic significance for the Perth-born performer, who recalls seeing Wicked there in 2010, which led to a life-changing moment.
“That was the first time I saw a professional show. It was just magical; it was from that point I realised I wanted to pursue a career in musical theatre. When I go on stage for Cinderella, I hope someone else in the audience has that same experience.”
