Georgia Fowler: ‘What scares me about having daughters’

Supermodel Georgia Fowler reveals that despite garnering more than 1.2 million Instagram followers, she is afraid to have young daughters who bare it all online.

From her star turn on the coveted Victoria’s Secret runway not once but three times, to fronting the most recent Seafolly campaign, Georgia Fowler is both well-practised and utterly at home modelling bikinis and lingerie. And posting these photo shoots to her Instagram page is just another facet of her job.

However, Fowler admits that if the tables were turned and she were a parent, she’d have very different thoughts on the subject.

“Instagram can be a really positive thing for creatives, but it does worry me on the flipside if there are very young girls posting images of themselves, that may be a bit too provocative for their age,” the Kiwi model tells Stellar On Friday.

“That part... oh God, that scares the sh*t out of me if I ever have girls.”

And while Fowler’s loyal followers on the platform (1.2 million of them) lap up each and every post she shares, the 28-year-old reveals that she’s wary of revealing more than is absolutely necessary.

“Personally, I’ve never enjoyed showing too much,” she says. “It’s a fine line between over-sharing and connecting with your followers, who want to see your real life. So it’s always a seesaw, trying to figure out that balance.”

After returning to Australia from New York for a quick visit in March 2020, Fowler’s plans were thrown into disarray by COVID-19. When the industry cancelled fashion shows and photo shoots – a “frightening time” – she realised the unseen benefit being stuck in Sydney would mean for her personal life.

“I never thought I would be able to just be in one place with my nieces and family for as long as I have,” she tells Stellar On Friday. “And if I had made that decision to stop, I think I would have felt quite torn because there’d always be job options – it would have been a more difficult decision.”

Instead, Fowler – who has modelled for the likes of Miu Miu, Armani and Chanel – got “back to basics”, spending lockdown cooking and playing tennis with her family and partner Nathan Dalah, the co-founder of Japanese-style salad chain Fishbowl.

“We thought that we were going to have to do long distance for a year or two [Dalah is based in Sydney],” she says.

“But the world just worked it out for us and we didn’t have to even go there. I [contemplated], ‘OK, what makes you happy?’ And it’s being with the people you love, being healthy, and doing work that you want to do. It’s been inspiring.”
