'They just ordered juice - what they got instead was a nightmare'

Shocking Experience: Family Alleges Insect Repellant Served at Perth Restaurant

A Perth family is fuming after claiming their two daughters were served insecticide rather than juice during a meal at an Italian restaurant.

Marcus and Michelle Lemin claim their two daughters Olivia and Hannah, aged 11 and 12, were given the poisonous liquid during a family celebration on Friday night.

The Daily Mail reports the two girls ordered cranberry juice with their dinner, but were allegedly instead given citronella torch and lamp oil, a red chemical solution used to repel mosquitos.

“My daughters just went to gulp it down, and they both spat the cranberry juice out and said ‘it’s poisoned’,” Michelle told ABC News.

She then took a sip herself and spat it out too.

Marcus then smelt the liquid before demanding to see the bottle the juice came from.

He claims a waiter initially refused his request, but later brought him a bottle of insecticide that was pulled from the bar’s fridge.

The Daily Mail reports Mr Lemin took a photograph of the bottle showing the label ‘Plus Bifenthrin’ along with a prominent warning.

He told 9News the waiter was extremely apologetic and seemed distraught by the alleged incident.

Hannah and Olivia were later taken to hospital on advice from the poisons information centre, where they were kept for monitoring for six hours.

“I was really scared of what it was,” Olivia told 9News. “I was scared I was going to die.

“It felt like someone had poured fire in your stomach, and it felt like you had pins and needles in your arms and legs.”

"You can't let these sorts of mistakes happen"

The Daily Mail reports the two girls and their mum have all been discharged from hospital and are now resting at home.

Mr Lemin said he contacted local authorities and made a complaint to the Department of Health after the alleged incident.

“I think it’s pretty simple, right? You can’t manage a restaurant and allow chemicals to be in an area where these sorts of mistakes can happen,” he told ABC News.

“As a minimum, there needs to be some steps taken to ensure that they basically adhere to the state safe handling of chemicals and hazardous materials.”

The Daily Mail reports the Department of Health will support the local council in investigating the family’s claims.

The restaurant, who has declined to comment, will also investigate the incident.
