Sleep consultant reveals sleep tip that will have you singing hallelujah!

It even has major benefits for us exhausted parents too.

How do I now when my toddler is ready?

In the early days of having a newborn it often feels like you’ll never know what a good night's sleep feels like ever again.

As they grow and the regressions hit, it feels as if it’s only going to get worse

However, there’s one hack that just might be music to your ears.

Hello co-regulation

Turns out selecting one singular song is the way to catch those precious Zzzz’s.

I reached out to my own sleep consultant after watching a TikTok, by mum blogger Cameron Rogers, who initially introduced me to the hack.

Taylor from sleepysquishco confirmed that staying on repeat actually works wonders.

“It definitely is beneficial to select a song to sing to your newborn and sing this at every nap and bedtime. It becomes a great association for sleep and can help them get into a calm state ready for sleep,” she told Kidspot

She says it not only restores both your sleep, but also does wonders for baby!

“Singing has a positive impact on our little ones nervous system, it can help regulate and calm them due to the rhythmic repetitive approach most songs have, which can be soothing,” she explained.

Providing that wholesome rhythmic journey to sleep can also have major benefits for us as parents.

“Often with singing we tend to lower the tone of our voice and also lower our own nervous system (hello co-regulation),” she shared.

“There are many things that singing can do to provide sensory inputs into the wind down which also help to calm the body.”

"Pick a song you don’t mind hearing on repeat"

In the TikTok comment section from Cameron’s video, mothers were quick to share their experience.

“Edelweiss since day one!” one mother hailed.

“My son's song is "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", specifically the Hawaiian version by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. I didn't even mean to pick a song, it just happened,” another chimed in.

A third shared how they fondly remember their own sleep song: “I am 24 and just went to a concert where they played Dreams by Fleetwood Mac and I started closing my eyes. Thanks Dad.”

For my song it was Five Little Ducks. However I ran into strife once daycare taught him the actions to go with that nursery rhyme.

“In terms of choosing a song, I highly recommend one that is more of a lullaby style. One that is calming and less stimulating. However, if sung in a low and slow approach you can choose any song,” she advised.

“Pick a song you don’t mind hearing on repeat. The key is consistency. Songs with actions can be a bit stimulating so I do recommend one that doesn’t stimulate as much!”

So it’s probably fair to say we leave Cardi B’s Bodak Yellow for another time.
