A debate on “airport etiquette” has divided the internet, after a mum took to TikTok claiming a stranger touched her three-year-old daughter and asked her to be quiet on a plane.

A Queensland mum has gone viral after sparking debate on “airport etiquette” while on holiday in SA.

Artist Emma Darrouzet has amassed more than 360,000 views on TikTok after sharing an exchange between her three-year-old daughter, Odette, and a stranger in line at baggage check in.

The mum posted a clip of herself recounting the incident, where she claimed a woman tapped the tot’s shoulder and said, “I hope you know you need to be quiet on the airplane”.

Ms Darrouzet said her daughter has been touched “without consent”.

Online, opinions were divided.

“There needs to be a section on all airplanes where all the children and their parents sit. With sound proof walls. So the rest of us can enjoy a peaceful flight,” one user said.

“I would never say it out loud, but that’s all we’re hoping for; a tantrum free flight,” commented another.

But others were quick to jump to the family’s defence.

“Children deserve the privilege of flying too,” one person wrote.

People are so weird. Airport etiquette??? What about don’t touch a child that’s not yours etiquette???”

In a separate post to TikTok, Ms Darrouzet asked her daughter how she felt about the incident; with the three-year-old revealing she was “sad” and “a bit scared”.

“She was mean,” Odette said in the clip.

“Kids are people too.”

Speaking to 5AA on Thursday morning, Ms Darrouzet said the incident was unprovoked.

“The lady kept turning around and looking at my daughter,” she said.

“My daughter was just standing there, holding my hand, silent. She wasn’t doing anything.”

Ms Darrouzet said that a few minutes later, the woman put her hand on her daughter’s shoulder and got down to her level before telling her she needed to be quiet on the plane.

“I said ‘yeah she knows, she flown a lot, she understands aeroplane etiquette, thank you’,” Ms Darrouzet said.

Ms Darrouzet said she was proud of her daughter’s behaviour throughout the flight.

In a subsequent TikTok video, Ms Darrouzet’s husband Jon addressed the commentary around the woman touching the child.

“We’re raising a young woman to understand the ideas around consent,” he said.

“(Consent discussions) start pretty young because that’s how we educate our children”.
